Hank Thompson Calling Quits
Don’t misinterpret the title to this blog. If Hank Thompson had it his way, he would be performing till the day he dies. However, Hank will be retiring for health reasons. The reasons have not been made public, but he is recovering at a Hospital, close to his Fort Worth home. Tracy Pitcox, Hank’s spokesperson, said “we are hoping for the best.” So it definitely sounds serious. Hank has been touring ever since his career began back in the 1940’s. He is a true legend.
UPDATE 11/14/07: Sadly, Hank passed away on November 6th (2007). Hank had been diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer and died at age 82 just days after his retirement announcement. A “celebration of life” service was held on November 14th at Billy Bob’s Texas, a Fort Worth honky-tonk.
Hank is truly one of the best. I had the opportunity to see him in concert in March of 2006, and he still sings and plays great - a wonderful country entertainer. Still touring in his 80’s shows what a talent he is. If you don’t own, highly recommend Hank’s “Live at the Golden Nugget” CD. It is off the chain - excellent work by all the musicians, especially Bobby Garrett on the pedal steel.
Certainly, one of my mother’s very favorite artists. My prayers for Hank Thompson and his family.
I was reading on Porter Wagoner’s website that Hank Thompson has lung cancer and is under hospice care.
It is very sad that another GREAT country has passed on…..he joins other greats from an era when country music was that, not modified for monetary reasons to what it is now….rock of the 50s & 60s
