Top 5 Overrated Country Songs

You know that song that plays when your with a group of people and the consensus is to turn it up. However, when you are by yourself and that same song comes on, you change the station. Here is a top 5 of those particular songs.

5. “Friends in Low Places.” I put this song on here because, unfornately it is going to stand the test of time. It will always be a favorite with fans who do not know any better. I would put other drinkin’ songs way above this one, Merle Haggard’s “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here And Drink” and Gary Stewart’s “She’s Actin’ Single(I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).  Another reason is that radio just killed this song with heavy rotation.

4. “Chattahoochie.” I am probably going to anger alot of country music fans with this one. Let me explain. To me personally, this is when Alan started to depart from his original formula of bare bones country. The swing snare was too much for me. It would have been the perfect hit for Kenny Chesney, but I would have loathed this song. It is still tolerable unlike his cover of ”Summertime Blues.”

3. “Angels Among Us.” Alabama is among my top three country bands of all time. However, the first time I heard this song it just kind of made me laugh. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe we are being watched by the Almighty, but they traded their country rock infused sound for sap and just an easy hit. This song was testament to how Alabama was getting soft in their old age.

2. “Pancho and Lefty”(Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard’s version)  I grew up loving this version. I have been exposed to alot of music since then, and I have got to tell you this cover does not translate as well as the orginal sung by Townes Van Zandt. After you hear Townes’ stripped down version of this song, I think you would agree that the piano intro to Willie and Merle’s cover just comes across silly and pointless. And,what is the deal with the male chorus? Zandt’s whiskey soaked vocals and lone guitar transform  this song to a lament for the untamed. Willie and Merle’s version might make you sing along, but Townes’ makes you stop and listen.

Stay tuned for #1.
