A Boy Named Shel

Shel Silverstein is an American Legend. He did not follow the rule book of writing. His style could never be pinned down. He always said that he did not mold his method from any past writer.  Not only could he write hit songs for the likes of Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, and Dr. Hook, but through classics such as The Giving Tree and A LIght in the Attic, Silverstein has proven that he belongs with the likes of Thurber or George Price.  Bobby Bare Jr and Sr are heading up a new tribute album to Shel. It will  feature Alison Krauss, George Jones, Ray Price, My Morning Jacket, Kris Kristofferson(accompanied by the Silver Jews), and The Black Keys. It is comforting to know that Bobby Bare is at the helm. He was a great friend to Shel. He now only wrote Marie Laveau for Bobby, but he also collaborated on the great album Old Dogs, which featured Waylon Jennings, Jerry Reed, Bobby Bare, and Mel Tillis. Silverstein wrote all the songs on thsy album.

Shel was tremendous. Probably the only top selling Children’s author that wrote for Playboy. Check out this interview about Shel Silverstein. His nephew is also an author and has lots of stories.
