#2 Country Music Actor

#2 has been a very hard choice for me, but this Kentucky native does anything but ‘Act Naturally’. This Bakersfield influenced singer is none other than Dwight Yoakam. I am a movie buff, so I can pretty much list every movie that Yoakam has made(even the bad ones). However, he is the only country singer that needs to be pointed out to be recognized in a film. He is just that good. Of all his performances, his most credible one is of Doyle Hargraves in the film Sling Blade. We all know this movie so I am not going to oblige you with a quote, but Dwight is extremely convincing as the bigoted abusive boyfriend of Natalie Canerday’s character Linda. Doyle is highly detestable while he ridicules the mentally challenged Karl Childers(played by Billy Bob Thornton). All of his supporting roles has had some nugget of excellence. Movies like The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Panic Room really show that Yoakam has range. But none of these are my favorite. The one that I am going to choose actually shows that the man can be funny. I am speaking of the opening scene in Wedding Crashers. Dwight’s character is getting a divorce from his wife, who is played by Rebecca De Mornay. Their banter back in forth is highly plausible and organic. They hit a home run with each ridiculous one liner, “You shut your mouth while you’re talking to me,” “That’s it, go ahead and comatose for me baby.”

I can name a few razzies though. His role as the wicked sheriff in Bandidas(though Penelope Cruz and Selma Hayek were fun to look at) and as the doctor in Crank are highly forgettable. Stay away from these movies, you can clearly tell that Yoakam just did them for a paycheck, kind of like Hayden Christenson. So is Dwight Yoakam a good actor, yes. Is he slightly better than our number 1. Maybe, but the presence of our #1 is mesmerizing. You will just have to wait and see.
