Reba McEntire’s chart topping success of the 1990’s is remarkable. She is among the best, destined for the Country Music Hall of Fame. She has always chosen songs that have strayed away from the typical subject matter of a country song. She was the first country artist to address the AIDS issue with the #14 hit “She Thinks His Name Was John.” She made two relevant covers of Vicki Lawrences’ “The Night The Light’s Went Out In Georgia” and Bobbi Gentry’s “Fancy.” Songwriters are elated when Reba chooses their songs for her upcoming albums. Her songs are almost guaranteed to become hits before they are even recorded.
You can not produce a successful run like this without manufacturing a few duds. Too bad our #9 is not one. It actually peaked at number 4 on the country charts. People love this song. They love the silly lyrics. They love the over-the-top female back ground vocals on the chorus. If it was any other female artist, this song probably would not have been as successful. Our #9 is “Why Haven’t I Heard From You.” The instrumentation is hokey. This song belonged on a Six Flags stage not on the top 5. Answer me this, why can’t she call him. She says that every one has a phone, why doesn’t she use her own? Guess what girls, I am going to enlighten you, guys hate phones.
Could any self-respecting guy like this song. This song caters to only one demographic, women. It would have been more fitting for the Forrester Sisters to record this song. Hey Reba fans this should have been a B-side release, not a top 5 hit.
