Grand Ole Opry member Charlie Walker died of colon cancer on Friday at his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Walker, originally from Copeville, Texas, was a prominent radio DJ in San Antonio for seven years prior to embarking on a career as a singer. His first big hit, penned by Harlan Howard, was the 1958 release “Pick Me Up on Your Way Down,” now a country standard. Walker became a Grand Ole Opry member in 1967. Said Opry Vice President and GM Pete Fisher, “We are truly grateful for all of the musical moments he has shared with us on the Opry stage and over the airwaves as a disc jockey. We will dedicate this weekend’s Opry shows to his memory.” Walker is survived by his wife, Connie; their 10 children; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
