Country music exploded in popularity during the 1990s. This is when we saw neo-traditionalism at it’s height, and where we saw country pop evolve into what we have today. However, every decade of any genre of music, has had it’s share of dross. You know, the songs that should have never made the cut. This countdown is dedicated to those songs that made you change the channel.

10. High-Tech Redneck

This song gives proof that George Jones started to get soft in his old age. It makes sense. He was by all means getting older. This doesn’t mean, however, that his song-selecting skills were broken. Although “Slave Lover” had great lyrics, George’s novelty album The Novelty Side of George Jones leaves something to be desired.  So, I think it is safe to say that novelty was never his forte. What is most shocking, is that “High-Tech Redneck” charted higher than “I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair,” which was a better song. You would think that having step outs by Joe Diffie, Garth Brooks, and Alan Jackson would insure at least a top ten, but all it takes is cornball lyrics centered around a southerner with an impressive sound system to guarantee a top 25 hit. Does this have anything to do with country music’s demographic. Are we just happy with a few ‘Get ‘er Dones’ rather than something with substance. You tell me.
