Have you visited Memphis lately? I was able to visit Memphis not too long ago and stopped by one of my favorite artists’ house. Yes, I’m talking about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. I was able to pass by the Heartbreak Hotel, see his Blue Suede Shoes, and take a tour of Elvis’ Graceland mansion. It was amazing, each room had a different theme, I guess for Elvis when he was in different moods. One room I recall was his “Jungle Room” this room was lined with green shag carpet from floor to ceiling. Yes, even the ceiling of this room had carpet. I was able to tour the entire house, except the upstairs (where Elvis’ bedroom was) which was off limits to all visitors. While touring Elvis’ home you could see all of his jumpsuits, gold and platinum albums, odd but cool furniture, and maybe see a side of Elvis that you wouldn’t normally see from just listening to his music. I saw rare footage and photos of Elvis and his family from his childhood through right before his death. Elvis along with his parents are buried on the property, each with a large plague over the grave itself. You can walk by and pay your respects and lay flowers or small items on or around the grave itself. Along the outside of Graceland there was a wall built by Elvis to keep some privacy while he was alive. After his death many wrote on the wall, and today people still do so leaving their mark on this amazing place.
Within the walls of Graceland you’ll find Elvis’ mansion, swimming pool, record room, and his horse barn with horses who strain from Elvis’ horses. When I traveled to Graceland the actual stables were off limits to visitors, you could still see the horses if they were outside the barn, but the barn itself was just to look at to visitors. As of yesterday the barn has now been opened to visitors and Lisa Presley was there to cut the ribbon at the unveiling of the barn. Now inside the barn you can see Elvis’ horses up close, his saddles, boots, spurs, chaps, and other things horse and riding related that belonged to Elvis and that he used. I might have to make another trip to Graceland to see this. If you would like to see these sights visit www.elvis.com and click on “Visit Graceland” and it will tell you everything you need to know.
