Jamey Johnson’s Power Ballad

Jamey Johnson has been unofficially crowned country music’s new messiah. It sounds great, in theory, but it could not be any further from the truth. Because what’s a messiah without his disciples. Case in point, Johnson’s latest single “On My Way To You.” The song creates tension, both lyrically and vocally. Musically, it evolves into a country rock ballad that is reminiscent of Waylon Jennings‘ “Come With Me.” It is evident that Johnson took painstaking process of getting the vocal just right without compromising the emotional integrity of the song. If you want country karaoke listen to Rascal Flatts, if you want to hear someone really sing a country song give this one a listen. To traditionalists this song might teeter too much between rock and country, but to “country” radio it still might be too country. I don’t hear anybody else jumping on Jamey’s bandwagon, which makes Jamey a rebel, not a savior.
