The Opry Gets It Right

For those who think that the Opry has gotten above it’s raisin’, here is something that might pique your interest. The Opry is adding a new show to it’s weekly schedule. On March 26th, Thursdays from 6-9pm, The Grand Ole Opry is going to cater to those who love real country music.  This is going to be your chance to see more legends perform. What is even more appealing, is that the playlist will only consist of classic country. This means that even the newest country artists are going to perform the classics. The Opry does not need to cop out on this one. People have heard the same Hank Williams’ song over and over by a multitude of artists, but what if someone performed a Faron Young song or a Ray Price tune. There needs to be some sort of request system from ticketholders.  Wouldn’t it be incredible to hear Sara Evans sing Skeeter Davis’ “End of the World” or Brad Paisley sing “Hello Walls.” Now that is what I would pay to see.

It sounds like the complaints paid off. There is one thing that troubles me about this added slot. What about the weekenders? Those people that only have Friday thru Saturday to enjoy the Opry. I am guessing that it will only be seasonal, just like Tuesday nights.

On a side-note, can somebody tell me why George Strait never plays the Opry? I know he lives in Texas, but he needs to make the trek up to Nashville once in awhile.

Sure they got it right. I believe they announced this little endeavor right about the time they were hit with an age discrimination lawsuit by Stonewall Jackson. If you read the letters in the Tennessean, you would figure out that this was done to try to pretty up their image again. As pleased as I am that the classic stars will be recognized, I’m not giving the Opry any credit. Instead, thank Stonewall, he took a lot of criticism on this site and others for taking on the Opry. Sometimes the good guys win – or at least tie. And since we’re on this subject, I noticed the nice article about Ernie Ashworth. I mentioned several months ago that I had heard more than one of the older artists complaining about their treatment by the Opry. Ernie Ashworth was one of them. Too bad he didn’t live long enough to benefit. He seemed like a really nice person.
