Most Underrated Country Songs, “Billy The Kid”

The brilliant baritone of Billy Dean can only be surpassed by the brilliance of his mullet. There are only a handful of country artists that could execute the amount of smoothness that Billy Dean brought to each vocal. It is a travesty that he did not have a single #1 hit to his name. Dean did have a string of top 5’s in 1992, but Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus were his kryptonite. People mostly attribute Billy with the inspirational “Only Here For A Little While” or “Somewhere in My Broken Heart,” but forget the equally as good or better #4 hit “Billy The Kid.”

The song is part nostalgia, part coming of age. Everyone can remember the innocence they had as a child, and unfortunately, when they lost it. The song is book-ended by young Billy and adult Billy. Young Billy’s life is simple, good is good and bad is bad. When Billy becomes an adult he realizes life is anything but simple. He pines for the way things used to be, but they never will. Billy Dean wrote a great song. It’s a shame that he was never able to repeat it. He did record the #4 hit “That Girl’s Been Spyin’ On Me,” but that’s like saying “Lost Boys 2″ was Cory Feldman’s comeback performance. However, I would like  everyone to remember Billy Dean as he once was. So in that respect, I miss Billy The Kid as well.
